The demand for the nook is so great that if you preorder one today, you wont get it until the first week in January. I expect nook to be a rather popular item on Ebay this year.
Simarlarly, Last year, demand for the kindle 1 drove prices to over $700 then fell to about $500, this was when the kindle still cost $379. Only time will tell how high the nook will go, but due to its features, I expect it to be well above sticker. |

There are Many Screen Technologies that we use everyday, from LED, LCD, Plasma, OLED and now thanks to Ebook reader Eink.
Currently Eink is only in black and white, but here is where Eink shines -- quite literally -- all other technologies out of the water. It does not require a backlight to be able to see it. the only other technology that can do that are certain froms of LCD screens, and there are a few Ebook Readers that use LCD screens. The Ectaco Jetbook to name one.
Why no backlight? Well let me ask you a question. Have you ever tried to read your cellphone during a sunny day? bet it was pretty hard or close to impossible. this is because the sun is more powerful than the backlight, and it just shines right throgh it. Eink on the other hand, is Opaque. That means the sun will hit the Screen, than bounce right back off. with eink it is no different than reading a sheet of paper.
Einks Greatest drawbacks right now are, No Color, The Screen Flashes when it updates a page, and its pretty dark compared to White paper. as someone who has worked with eink for a long time, let me tell you my thoughts on it.
- The Color aspest is a good one, but not a game breaker, because seriously how many books have you read that had pages in color? This is expected to be solved in 2010 when the first color Eink Panels start to be shipped.
- The Flash. this is what everyone who has ever seen a read will complain about. Even I did on my first day. but it is quickly glanced over. on the Newer devices like the PRS 600 or the Kindle 2 or DX, the flash is only a fraction of a second. you will quickly learn when to turn the page so when you move your eyes from the bottom of the page to the top, the flash would have already been finished. I've had the pleasure of using the jetbook recently. and my bigest annoyance is that I cant tell sometimes when I turn the page! the flash is gone. it's a feature I miss. in the end though it would be nice to deal away totally with the flash, especailly in the menus cause that is where you notice it the much, the new devices like the kindle 2 and the prs 6 or 700 have the ability to update the screen without the flash. but the flash really makes a page look nice, if you update the screen currently without the flash, words look jagged
- The "shady" screen. This the darkest screens in the market I have seen are on the prs 500(discontinued years ago now), and the prs 700. I used the prs 700 for almost a full year so I have learned it quirks. if you have poor eyesight I would look into a better(brighter) device, the Kindle or PRS 300 or 505 both have very bright screens (though they still look dark compared to paper) but they are readable in 99% of circumstances. I love the PRS 700, but its just plain dark compared to other readers. In the Sun however I found the darker screen to be a big bonus. If you have ever tried to read a book in the sun, you will know it hurts your eyes. Reading the 505 in the sun is just plain painful. while I read the PRS 700 in the sun all day long without problems (at the beach I would wear sunglasses too, but at a park it wasn't that bad). When I get a device with a brighter screen, I Will be buying a dark film for reading in the sun.
I hoped you learned a bit about Eink, it's a great technology, that is getting better every year.

Currently Seen here http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/features/techspecs/ It confirms the Price of $259 bucks, but has a $69 Warrenty (read: RIPOFF) and covers are extra just like the Amazon Kindle, but they have some nice ones. The covers range in price from $20 all the way upto $125 and it doesn't seem that M-edge has a showing yet (I love M-edge covers)
As you can see it Has Wireless from AT&T, which has decent nationwide coverage. Also the Price of $259 is on Par with Amazon Currently, but by looks alone, The Nook Blows the Kindle out of the water. It has a Color Touch Screen on the bottom instead of the keypad of the kindle, and from all the pictures I have seen. It can do a whole lot. It runs Android, which is the Moble Operating System which is all the buzz now as an open source Ipod killer. The G-phone from T-mobile, and a new Phone called the Droid from Verizon both Use it currently in The US. and within a Year we are expected to see upto 5 or 10 phones that Run it. It is Powerful, and it looks like B&N are gonna use it to its advantage.
The Date of 11/30 being pushed around as the release date means you will probably get it for Christmas if you order it. Lets hope they Keep up with the Demand. I looks like this year the Nook is going to be on alot of Christmas Wish Lists, I know it will be on Mine.
I Have just ordered one, and after adding a $35 cover. it came to $320 including Tax. Just for your information

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Barnes & Noble reader will be announced tomorrow at $259. The descriptions match the leaked photos exactly. Wireless is confirmed, but we kind of knew that already. at $259 that currently ties that Amazon Kindle US Edition, but with the inclusion of a color touch screen, that might just make people go Barnes and Noble instead of Amazon.
Also the name seems to be the "Nook" |
